Debi, a devoted grandmother raising her grandson Christian and his three siblings, received an early Christmas surprise that left her speechless. Just days before her birthday, a Secret Santa brought joy to her family through the East Idaho News’ Surprise Squad.
Debi has faced extraordinary challenges since a tragic car accident left Christian, then 10, with a severe traumatic brain injury. The crash claimed the driver’s life and led to Christian spending six weeks in the hospital, fighting for his life, followed by 13 months in a residential care facility. Throughout, Debi never wavered in her commitment to him, balancing his intensive care with ensuring his siblings were cared for by family and friends.
Recently, Debi moved into a new home and brought Christian back to live with her, fulfilling a dream she worked tirelessly to achieve. However, the house lacked much-needed furnishings, adding to the family’s struggles.
Enter Secret Santa. Through the Surprise Squad, Debi received $8,000 to furnish her home, along with $4,000 in gift cards—$2,000 for groceries and necessities, and $1,000 for gas to support transportation for Christian’s medical appointments. The surprise brought Debi to tears.
“I can hug you, but I’d probably crush you,” she said, laughing through her emotions as Nate, the Surprise Squad host, handed her the gifts.
Despite living on a fixed income of retirement and Social Security, Debi’s spirit remains strong. She shared that Christian has defied medical expectations, learning to walk again and making progress, though he still requires constant care.
The Secret Santa also sent a heartfelt message: “You’re loved, you’re cared about, and someone is aware of you.” This act of kindness reminded Debi that she and her family are not alone.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Debi expressed her thanks. “Nobody’s ever given us anything like this. I’m just so happy,” she said, her voice filled with emotion.
This Christmas, thanks to Secret Santa’s generosity, Debi and her grandchildren will enjoy the comfort of a fully furnished home and the knowledge that they are cared for by a community that values their perseverance and love.
