My 32-year-old stepdaughter recently lost her job and wants to move back in with us. She has a history of being lazy and taking advantage of her father’s kindness. I told her that if she wanted to stay here, she would need to pay rent, as this is not a free hotel.

She smirked and replied, “You’re wrong. This is my father’s house, and you don’t get a say in it!” When I brought this up with her father, he shocked me by saying, “Clear out your mother’s things from the spare room and make space for my daughter.”

He even justified his stance by saying, “Your mother stays here rent-free occasionally, so why shouldn’t my daughter be allowed to do the same?”

I tried to explain that my mother only stays for a day or two at a time, whereas his daughter is manipulative and would likely take advantage of the situation by never moving out. However, he refused to listen. Now, I feel disrespected and like a stranger in my own home. What should I do?
