During a hailstorm, when an elderly woman struggled to reach her car with her groceries, a kind young grocery bagger stepped in, carrying an umbrella and walking her safely to her vehicle.

While bagging groceries at Ingles Market in North Carolina, Aaron Sanders noticed the storm rolling in. Rain and hail poured down steadily, and he spotted an elderly woman standing by the entrance, her cart full of groceries, gazing anxiously at the weather.

After a few moments, Aaron approached her and offered to help her get to her car. She politely declined, worried about him getting soaked.

“I offered to help her, but she said no a few times,” Aaron explained. “She didn’t want me getting wet.” Yet the storm wasn’t easing up, and her frozen groceries were starting to thaw.

Aaron gently insisted, assuring her that he didn’t mind getting wet and would feel better if he could help. Eventually, she agreed.

Holding an umbrella over her, Aaron escorted the woman to her car through the heavy rain. The downpour was so intense that she wrapped her arm around him to help shield them both from getting soaked. Violet Baiera, one of Aaron’s coworkers, witnessed the sweet moment and snapped a photo of them walking together under the umbrella.

Once they reached her car, Aaron helped her load the groceries. As she got inside, a strong gust of wind flipped Aaron’s umbrella inside out, leaving him drenched. He returned to the store soaking wet—only to be met with applause from customers who had been watching his act of kindness.

“I’m not surprised at all. Aaron’s a wonderful young man,” said Pat Bowmen, manager at Ingles Market.

When reporters later asked Aaron why he was so willing to help, he gave all the credit to his mother.

“She’s always been there for me, making sure I had food, even if she went without. She taught me everything about kindness. I am who I am because of her,” Aaron said.
