Pitbulls often get an unfairly bad reputation, with many people wrongly labeling them as aggressive, dangerous, or unpredictable. However, these negative perceptions are based on bias and misinformation. If given the chance to truly know pitbulls, many would realize that these dogs have big hearts—often being loyal, kind, and affectionate.
If you’re skeptical, let me share the story of Lara, a pitbull found abandoned near the harbor of Nafplion, Greece. Not only was she deserted in an isolated area, but her owner also tied her to a tree without food or water. Left alone and scared, Lara’s situation grew even worse when her neighbors, afraid of her breed, refused to help.
To make matters even more heartbreaking, Lara was pregnant. With no escape and no food, she gave birth to four puppies while still chained to the tree. For ten days, Lara cared for her pups, feeding them whatever she could find, all while battling hunger and dehydration. Tragically, the smallest pup didn’t survive, but thanks to Lara’s unwavering care, the other four did.

Eventually, an animal welfare group learned about Lara’s plight and rescued her. When they arrived, they found her in poor health, but her dedication to her pups was evident. Despite the hardship, Lara had done everything in her power to protect and nurture her babies.
Lara and her pups were placed in a foster home where Linda from The Orphan Pet took them in. Initially, Lara was frightened and distrustful of her new surroundings, but with time and love, she began to feel safe and relaxed. Today, Lara and her pups are thriving in their new home, a heartwarming reminder of the strength and devotion that pitbulls—and all dogs—are capable of.
Let’s continue to honor courageous dogs like Lara and the people who devoted their time to rescuing and caring for them!
