Maddie, pregnant and hoping to make peace with her mother-in-law before the baby arrives, came home early one day—only to walk into a disturbing scene.
She and her husband, Theo, had just moved into a new home. When Theo left on a work trip, his mother Meredith, who had never truly accepted Maddie, offered to help with unpacking. Maddie saw it as a chance to bridge their strained relationship.

“She’s probably trying to get to know you better,” Theo had said optimistically. But Meredith had other intentions.
Meredith adored Theo’s ex-wife, Kelsey—a poised, child-free traveler who, despite her amicable split from Theo, remained a symbol of the “ideal daughter-in-law” in Meredith’s eyes. Maddie, by contrast, never quite measured up.
One day, after her boss sent her home early due to morning sickness, Maddie returned to a quiet house. The silence felt unsettling. Curious, she looked for Meredith—only to hear hushed whispers coming from the bedroom. What she saw stunned her.

Meredith was sitting cross-legged on the bed, surrounded by candles and old photos of Theo and Kelsey. In one hand she held a ring; in the other, Theo’s baby blanket. She was whispering a strange mix of prayers and incantations.
“What are you doing?” Maddie demanded, her shock triggering a kick from the baby. Meredith calmly replied, “I’m fixing things. I’m trying to bring Kelsey back and make things right.”
That was the breaking point.
Furious and sickened, Maddie ordered Meredith to leave immediately. Meredith, mumbling about being unappreciated, gathered her things and stormed off. Maddie documented the scene with photos to show Theo.

When Theo returned home and saw the evidence, he was visibly shaken. “I knew she had a hard time letting go,” he said, “but I didn’t think she’d go this far.” Together, they confronted Meredith. During an emotional exchange, she admitted to struggling with the past.
“If you want to be part of our child’s life,” Theo told her, “you need help.”
Though it wasn’t easy, Meredith eventually agreed to therapy. Over time, she changed. She even hosted a baby shower for Maddie and was the first to hold their son after his parents.
Though Maddie has since forgiven her, a part of her remains watchful. Meredith may have let go of her dream of Kelsey returning, but Maddie isn’t letting her guard down completely—not when it comes to her child.
