It all started when Mark suddenly announced a business trip to Tokyo. He said it was for an important meeting with international clients—an opportunity that could significantly boost his career. We went over the expenses together, and he told me the company would cover everything except for the flight, hotel, and some initial costs. Still, despite his reassurances, something didn’t sit right with me. The night before he left, he was unusually quiet, packing with a distant look in his eyes.

Mark normally loves to share his professional milestones and everyday work updates on social media. He often posts on LinkedIn about meetings, conferences, or even what he eats with clients. But this time, after just one post from the airport lounge, he went completely silent online. No updates, no check-ins, nothing. That was highly unusual for him. When I texted to check in, his replies were short and vague, which only fueled my unease.

When Mark finally got back from Tokyo, I was eager to see the photos he usually takes—he loves capturing moments from his travels, whether it’s the local food, city scenes, or casual work snapshots. But when I asked to see pictures, he brushed it off, saying he didn’t feel like taking any this time. That alone raised more red flags, since it was completely unlike him.

Since coming back, he’s been distant. He chose to sleep in the guest room, saying it had better air conditioning—a difference he’d never mentioned before. Then one night around midnight, I heard him whispering on the phone. When I went to check, he pretended to be asleep, but I couldn’t shake the growing sense of dread. I felt like he was definitely hiding something.

This morning, I decided to voice my concerns. I approached him calmly, explaining how I’d been feeling about the trip and his behavior since returning. I wasn’t accusing him—I just wanted to share what was weighing on me. But instead of listening, he got defensive. He told me I was imagining things and refused to talk about it further. Then he stormed out and left for work, leaving me with a heavy heart and too many unanswered questions.

Now, sitting here trying to understand what’s really going on, I can’t help but feel that something is truly wrong. I’m unsure how to handle this without pushing him even further away.
