Finding a rental home isn’t easy. Often, you only uncover the real issues after you’ve signed the lease and settled in. Some landlords place unreasonable restrictions—like not letting you use the air conditioner during a heatwave—or even enter your home without warning.

That’s why stories like this remind us just how challenging it can be to find a decent, stable place to live. Not long ago, my landlady called out of the blue and told me I had just two days to vacate the apartment. Her relatives were visiting town, and she wanted them to stay in my place. I pleaded with her for more time, but she refused. I felt utterly hopeless—there was no way I could find a new apartment in just two days.

By some miracle, I did. My manager at work noticed how down I looked and asked me what was wrong. I explained the situation, and to my surprise, he told me that his wife had a vacant apartment and I was welcome to stay there. I was beyond relieved. I packed up and moved into the new place immediately.

But then, the unexpected happened—my former landlady called again and told me that her plans had changed and I could stay after all. I said no. She tried to persuade me, even offering to lower the rent. She’d always said she appreciated that I paid on time and kept the place spotless. But the damage was done. She kicked me out without a second thought—and now she wanted me back?

No thanks. I’m not a backup plan. I was treated like I didn’t matter, and I won’t go back to that.
