My mother-in-law has never truly accepted me into the family. So, when she acted warm and cheerful at my baby shower, I thought maybe things had finally changed—perhaps carrying her first grandchild had softened her feelings toward me.

But when it came time to open gifts, the mood in the room shifted. I unwrapped her present and felt my stomach drop. Inside was a stack of parenting books—around a dozen of them—with arrogant, mocking titles.

Among them were Why Your Kids Hate You: A Brutally Honest Guide to Parenting, The Idiot’s Guide to Raising Kids: Foolproof Parenting Techniques, and Parenting 101: How to Avoid Raising a Total Disaster.

Everyone went silent. I forced a smile, pretending not to be hurt, but inside I was furious and humiliated. After about 20 minutes, I quietly handed the books back to her and asked her to leave.

Since then, the tension between us has been unbearable, and I honestly don’t know how I’m going to navigate the future with her still so involved in our lives.
