My mother-in-law never truly accepted me as part of their family. So when she showed up to my baby shower acting warm and friendly, I was honestly surprised. I thought maybe things were finally changing — that she was happy because I was about to give her her first grandchild.
But then came the gift opening. The entire room fell silent as I unwrapped her present — and my heart sank. Inside was a stack of about a dozen parenting books with insulting, condescending titles.
Some of them read things like Why Your Kids Hate You: A Brutally Honest Guide to Parenting, The Idiot’s Guide to Raising Kids: Foolproof Parenting Techniques, and Parenting 101: How to Avoid Raising a Total Disaster.
I tried to stay composed, smiling through the shock and humiliation, even though everyone could tell I was furious and hurt. After about 20 minutes, I calmly handed the books back to her and asked her to leave the party.
Since then, things have been incredibly tense between us, and I honestly don’t know how to deal with her moving forward — especially now that she’ll be part of my child’s life.
