People often believe that good deeds will always be rewarded—but life doesn’t always follow that pattern. Sometimes kindness is met with gratitude, while other times, it brings unexpected or even unpleasant reactions.

About ten years ago, I was working as a waitress in a small restaurant that served set lunches. One afternoon, an elderly man came in, asked about the price, grumbled, and turned to leave. I felt sorry for him, so I decided to pay for his meal myself.

My manager wasn’t pleased and scolded me, warning that the man might come back expecting free food again. But what was done was done. That evening, something incredible happened—an ordinary-looking man walked in and left me a generous tip.

At that time, I was struggling to cover my rent and debts, and that unexpected act of generosity was enough to take care of everything. It reminded me that sometimes, kindness does come full circle—just not always from where you expect it.
