I adore my daughter-in-law and truly see her as part of the family. While shopping for Christmas, I asked my son what kind of gift she might appreciate. His response shocked me: “Get her a frying pan so she can finally cook like you.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. How did I raise this child? I thought to myself.
It wasn’t the first time I’d seen him treat her disrespectfully. He constantly made rude remarks about her cooking, criticized the way she kept the house, and belittled her job as if his was somehow more important. Watching my son behave this way broke my heart. As a single mother, I tried so hard to raise him to respect women — but in that moment, it felt like I had failed.
My daughter-in-law never complained, though her eyes often said what her words did not. She would smile and brush off his comments, pretending they didn’t hurt, but I could see the pain behind her polite laughter. This Christmas, I decided it was time to teach my son a lesson he wouldn’t forget.
So yes, I bought her a frying pan — and a two-week vacation to Hawaii just for her. I carefully tucked the tickets inside the pan, wrapped it beautifully, and placed it under the tree. On Christmas morning, when she opened it, her expression was bittersweet — she smiled politely, probably thinking, Of course, a pan.
But when she lifted it out and saw the envelope inside, her eyes lit up. She gasped, pulled out the tickets, and her face filled with pure joy. Everyone cheered as she showed them off — everyone except my son, whose face turned bright red. “Mom, that’s not fair!” he blurted out.
I smiled and said sweetly, “Why not? You told me to get her a pan.” The room erupted in laughter. My daughter-in-law laughed hardest of all, clutching those tickets as if they were the best gift she’d ever received.
My son stayed quiet the rest of the day, clearly realizing the message behind my little “gift.” I just hope he took it to heart.
Still, I can’t help but wonder — should I have stayed out of it, or was I right to step in and make a point? I only wanted him to see how wrong he was and to start treating his wife the way she deserves.
