Many people believe that kindness eventually comes back to you, yet life doesn’t always make that clear in the moment. While some good deeds are met with gratitude, others are answered with unexpected or even opposite reactions.

Nearly ten years ago, I was working as a waitress at a restaurant that offered a fixed-price lunch. One afternoon, an elderly man came in, asked about the cost, complained, and was about to leave. Feeling sorry for him, I decided to serve him a meal and quietly paid for it myself.

My manager later scolded me, warning that word would spread and more people would expect free food. However, there was nothing that could be changed after the fact. That same evening, a seemingly ordinary customer left me an unusually large tip. At the time, I was struggling to cover rent and other expenses, and that generous amount was enough to take care of everything I owed.
