The Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, turned into a scene of horror on October 1, 2017, when a gunman unleashed a barrage of gunfire on the unsuspecting crowd, forever changing the lives of thousands in attendance.

Tragically, the shooting claimed the lives of 48 individuals and left 851 others injured, leaving a profound emotional and psychological impact that will endure for years to come.

Among the victims was Jovanna Calzadillas, a 30-year-old mother who was attending the concert with her husband Francisco ‘Frank’ Calzadillas. Amid the chaos, Jovanna was struck by a bullet to the head and fell to the ground, her life hanging in the balance.

Jovanna was swiftly transported to the nearest hospital, yet the medical team held little optimism for her chances of survival. With a gunshot wound to her head, her condition was critical, and the situation seemed dire. As Jovanna fought for her life, her husband Frank was left grappling with the harrowing prospect of a future without his beloved wife.

The situation took a turn for the worse when doctors delivered the devastating news to Frank that he would need to make the agonizing decision of whether to disconnect life support from Jovanna. Overwhelmed by grief and faced with an unimaginable choice, Frank found himself amid a nightmare.

In a pivotal moment, Frank experienced a transformative dream. In the dream, his wife Jovanna appeared before him, offering reassurance with the whispered words, “Everything will be all right.”

Upon awakening, Frank found himself resolute in his decision: he adamantly refused to consent to removing Jovanna from life support. Driven by unwavering love and commitment, he vowed never to abandon his wife in her time of need.

Miraculously, Jovanna regained consciousness, much to the astonishment of the medical team.

“After enduring such a severe gunshot wound, her recovery was nothing short of miraculous,” Frank shared. He serves as a police officer with the Salt River Police Department in Arizona.

Over the subsequent four months, Jovanna faced the arduous journey of rebuilding her life in the aftermath of the Las Vegas massacre.

Despite the slow and sometimes frustrating progress, Jovanna remained steadfast in her determination to recover, not only for herself but also for the sake of her family.

Since awakening from the ordeal, Jovanna has bravely shared her remarkable journey. While grappling with the traumatic memories of the past is undoubtedly challenging, she courageously speaks out about her emotions and the strides she’s making to reclaim a sense of normalcy in her life.

“On the night of October 1, a part of me vanished,” she reveals. “Though I may never fully return to the old Jovanna, I will emerge stronger than before.”

“For them,” Jovanna affirms, speaking of her family. “I’ll battle on, and my belief in myself will never waver.”

Her resilient message now resonates with survivors of the tragic Las Vegas attack, as well as countless others globally who may grapple with fear following adversity.

“We refuse to let individuals like him [the shooter] triumph,” she asserts. “And we refuse to be governed by fear.”
