In an extraordinary display of bravery, 65-year-old crane operator Glen Edwards became an unlikely hero during a dramatic rescue operation last Thursday in Reading. Edwards, hailing from Egham, faced fierce winds and thick smoke as he maneuvered his crane to save a man trapped on a burning building’s rooftop.

As thick black smoke enveloped the area, Edwards sprang into action upon spotting the distressed man signaling for help. Using a metal cage attached to his crane, Edwards made careful decisions amidst the challenging conditions. With assistance from a colleague and the anxious eyes of onlookers below, Edwards successfully lowered the man to safety, prompting cheers and applause from the crowd.

Edwards recounted the experience with a mix of relief and adrenaline, saying, “It seemed like an eternity until the man got inside. I was filled with an incredible rush of adrenaline.” Although the rescue was completed successfully, Edwards humorously noted that he hasn’t yet met the man he saved and joked, “He still owes me a drink for that!”

The rescue has resonated widely, leading to a fundraising page being set up to honor Glen Edwards. Initially aimed at £5,000, the fund has now surpassed £9,000, reflecting the community’s gratitude. Edwards expressed deep appreciation for the support and positive feedback he has received.

The rescued man, who was treated for mild smoke inhalation, was discharged from the hospital the same day.
