Jake and Mary Jacobs celebrated 70 years of marriage, overcoming significant obstacles along the way. Their love story began in 1940s Britain, where Mary, a white woman, met Jake, a black man, who was one of the few black people in the area at the time. Despite societal challenges and her father’s strong objections, Mary was determined to be with Jake.
They met at a technical school, where Mary was studying typing and shorthand, while Jake was training in the Air Force. Their connection grew through letters, and Jake eventually moved to the UK for better job opportunities.

At just 19, Mary accepted Jake’s proposal, causing her to be disowned by her family. They married in a registrar office in 1948, with no family present.
Their early years together were filled with hardships, from financial difficulties to facing racism, and dealing with the heartbreak of losing their first child to stillbirth. But over time, Mary secured a teaching job and Jake found work at the Post Office.

Despite the struggles, including Mary’s father’s refusal to accept Jake, their love remained strong. Now, in their 80s and 90s, they continue to treasure the 70 years they’ve shared together, a true testament to their love and perseverance.
