Many couples spend months or even years planning their weddings, hoping for everything to go smoothly. However, one bride shared how her mother-in-law was furious after they started the ceremony without her. Seeking opinions on whether she had acted unfairly, the woman turned to Reddit to explain her side of the story.
“We decided to have a phone-free wedding reception,” she wrote. “Mostly because my mom and a few others on my side are obsessed with social media, and I didn’t want anyone live-posting or blocking my expensive photographer just to take a terrible cellphone picture.”

After researching the idea, she opted for an unplugged ceremony, asking guests to place their phones in a basket before taking their seats. But her mother-in-law was outraged by this rule. “MIL isn’t even that attached to her phone,” she explained, “but she’s the type of person who feels the need to break any rule just for the sake of it.”
Her own mother tried reasoning with the MIL, emphasizing that it was their special day and asking her to respect their wishes. But the MIL refused, insisting that if she couldn’t keep her phone with her, she would leave it in her husband’s car—parked a seven-minute walk away—because she didn’t trust them to handle it.

Despite being informed that the ceremony was about to begin, the MIL still chose to leave and store her phone. The bride decided not to delay the wedding, and as a result, the MIL arrived midway through the ceremony. “My husband was upset, but he understood,” she shared. “He’s worried that one day he may have to go no contact with her, at least for a while, just to set boundaries. While this situation made him sad, he supports me standing my ground when necessary.”
After the wedding, several family members from the groom’s side criticized them, calling them inconsiderate for not waiting, especially since the MIL wasn’t gone for long. Though the MIL claimed she wasn’t bothered, she remained angry about the phone policy, even going so far as to declare that she wouldn’t visit their new home if they continued to be “power-hungry.” The ordeal also strained her husband’s relationship with his sister, leaving the bride questioning whether she had taken things too far.
Her post received over 2,000 comments, with many weighing in on the situation. One commenter argued that the bride had made a mistake, writing, “You went too far by not waiting for her. You robbed this woman of a once-in-a-lifetime moment—watching her son get married. That’s something she’ll never get back, all because you decided it was acceptable to take it from her. It was a cruel thing to do to someone, especially on a day when you officially became part of her family.”
Another person added, “She spent years raising the man you chose to marry. You should be grateful to her for that. If you had a son, would you be okay with his bride refusing to wait just ten minutes for you to return before the ceremony started? I’ve been to over 15 weddings, and not a single one began on time.”
Others also questioned the decision, with one commenter saying, “Unless there was an urgent reason to start exactly on time, what harm would it have done to wait? It seems like you were just trying to assert control and put her in her place.”
