After years of yearning, Emily’s dream was finally realized when she gave birth to beautiful triplet daughters. But just a day later, her husband abandoned them, claiming the babies were cursed.

As she gazed at her newborn girls—Sophie, Lily, and Grace—Emily’s heart swelled with love. They were perfect, each one a miracle. She had waited for them for so long—years filled with hope, longing, and prayer. Now, here they were, peacefully sleeping in their bassinets, their tiny faces serene. Emily wiped a tear from her cheek, overwhelmed by her intense love for them.

But when she looked up, she saw Jack. He had just returned from running errands, but something seemed off. He looked pale, avoiding her gaze and standing by the door as if unsure he wanted to be in the same room.

“Jack?” Emily called softly, patting the chair next to her bed. “Come sit with me. Look at them. They’re here. We did it.”

“They’re beautiful,” Jack mumbled, barely glancing at the girls. He moved closer, but still wouldn’t meet her eyes.

“Jack,” Emily said, her voice trembling. “What’s wrong? You’re scaring me.”

Taking a deep breath, Jack finally spoke. “Emily, I don’t think… I don’t think we can keep them.”

Emily’s world seemed to crumble beneath her. “What? Jack, what are you saying? They’re our daughters!”

Jack winced and looked away as though he couldn’t bear to see her face. “My mom… she went to see a fortune teller,” he whispered.

Emily blinked, trying to process his words. “A fortune teller? Jack, you can’t be serious.”

“She said… she said these babies… our girls…” Jack hesitated, his voice faltering. “She said they’d bring nothing but bad luck, that they’d ruin my life and be the reason I die.”

Emily gasped, struggling to comprehend what he was saying. “Jack, that’s insane. They’re just babies!”

Jack lowered his gaze, fear etched on his face. “My mom swears by this fortune teller. She’s been right about things before, and… she’s never been this sure.”

Anger flared within Emily. “So, because of some ridiculous prediction, you want to abandon them? Just leave them here?”

Jack hesitated, his expression a mix of guilt and fear. “If you want to bring them home… fine,” he muttered. “But I won’t be there. I’m sorry, Emily.”

Emily stared at him, stunned. “You’re serious, aren’t you? You’re going to walk away from your daughters over some story your mother heard?”

Jack remained silent, his shoulders slumped.

Emily took a shaky breath. “If you walk out that door, Jack,” she whispered, “you don’t come back. I won’t let you do this to our girls.”

Jack looked at her one last time, torn, before he turned and walked toward the door. “I’m sorry, Em,” he said quietly and left, his footsteps echoing down the hallway.

Emily sat there, heart pounding, staring at the empty doorway. A nurse entered, saw her distress, and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. As Emily gathered her things, she whispered to her babies, “Don’t worry, girls. I’m here. I’ll always be here.”

In the weeks that followed, Emily faced the challenges of caring for three newborns on her own. Although the experience was overwhelming, her love for Sophie, Lily, and Grace kept her going.

One afternoon, Emily’s sister-in-law, Beth, visited to help with the babies. Beth seemed troubled and finally confessed something that shook Emily to her core.

“I overheard Mom talking to Aunt Carol,” Beth explained. “She admitted there was no fortune teller. She made it all up. She was worried Jack would have less time for her with the triplets, so she convinced him the girls would bring bad luck to keep him close.”

Emily felt her world spin as Beth’s words sank in. “She lied to him. She tore my family apart for her own selfish reasons.”

Beth apologized, but Emily’s anger only grew. She didn’t know whether to confront her mother-in-law or tell Jack the truth in hopes of getting him back.

The next day, Emily called Jack. When he answered, she told him the truth about his mother’s lie. But Jack remained dismissive, unwilling to accept the reality.

“I’m sorry, Emily. I can’t do this,” he said, and the line went dead.

Over time, Emily adapted to life as a single mother. Though the days were tough, she found solace in the love of her daughters. As the months passed, Jack’s mother came to her, regret in her eyes. She admitted to the lie, expressing sorrow for the damage she had caused.

Emily, though still angry, knew her focus had to remain on her daughters. A year later, Jack returned, pleading to come back. But Emily had grown stronger.

“I already have a family, Jack. You weren’t there when we needed you,” she said, closing the door on the past.
