Maria felt like her life had finally fallen into place—she had just landed an amazing new job and found herself caught up in a surprising romance. But everything fell apart when her vindictive boss decided to push her out.
Tears welled up in Maria’s eyes as she embraced her son, Lucas.
“I’m so proud of you, sweetheart! When I first learned I was pregnant with you, I never dreamed you’d grow into such a successful man. And now, look at you—graduating law school magna cum laude!”
Lucas gave her a smirk. “You make it sound like I was a lost cause,” he joked.
Maria gave his arm a playful tap. “You know that’s not what I mean. I was only sixteen—just a kid myself. It was tough raising you so young, and I know I didn’t always get things right, but you’ve always been the best part of my life.”
He kissed her cheek and tousled her hair. Their bond was unique—Lucas had been raised by Maria’s parents while she finished school. At one point, they were even preparing for school at the same time, like siblings.
“I’m really going to miss you,” Maria said with a wistful sigh. “I’m thrilled about your new job, but I wish you were staying closer instead of moving to the city.”
“I’ll be back all the time. It’s only an hour away.”
The two of them walked arm in arm across the pristine college grounds. With the sun shining and the air fragrant and clean, it was the perfect day for Lucas to begin a new chapter.
Five years passed, and Maria entered the sleek, modern lobby of the corporation that had recently hired her. At forty, she felt like her life was just starting over—so much of her earlier years had been devoted to raising Lucas.
She especially felt that new-beginning energy when she met her supervisor, Allen. The chemistry was immediate—Maria felt an electric jolt when she shook his hand, unable to look away from his charming features.
“We’re lucky to have you, Maria,” Allen said warmly. “I was really impressed by your background, and I think you’re exactly what this place needs.”
“I’m really excited to be… here. I mean, this job is a dream come true.”
Allen flashed a grin, and Maria’s heart skipped a beat. She barely heard the rest of what he said, too distracted by the way his shirt fit across his shoulders and the sharp trim of his beard.
“Let me take you to your office,” he said, “you’re right next to mine—so I can keep a close eye on you.”
He gave her a wink that sent her stomach flipping. Maria forced herself to focus. She didn’t want to fall for a colleague—too many of her friends had learned the hard way that office romances could be a disaster.
Still, she couldn’t deny the pull. Allen would shoot her glances from across the room. There was no wedding ring on his finger. Their conversations over coffee became more frequent. When working side-by-side, their knees would sometimes touch, and neither pulled away.
Then came the breakthrough—their team landed a major contract.
“We did it!” Allen said, beaming.
Overcome with happiness, Maria hugged him. What started as a spontaneous moment of celebration quickly turned intimate. They remained in each other’s arms, neither wanting to let go.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured. “This isn’t right…”
Maria nodded, eyes locked with his. But the moment overtook them, and their first kiss sparked something passionate and undeniable. What followed was a secret, fiery affair—one that unfolded both in the office and behind closed doors elsewhere.
But that fire was quickly extinguished when Maria revealed she was pregnant.
“You can’t be serious,” Allen groaned, head in hands.
“I know this wasn’t planned, but we can figure it out,” Maria said gently, placing a hand on his arm.
“No, Maria. We can’t.” He got up and paced. “I care about you—but I’m married.”
Maria froze. “What? But you don’t wear a ring, and there are no photos of your family!”
“I keep my private life separate,” he said, avoiding her eyes. “I’ll pay for the termination.”
Maria’s expression hardened as she wrapped her arms protectively around her belly. “Absolutely not.”
Allen’s face darkened. “You’re making a big mistake.”
“No, Allen. You are.” With that, Maria walked out, heartbroken to be abandoned yet again by the father of her child.
The months that followed were some of the hardest Maria had ever endured. Her parents’ disappointment cut deep, and she couldn’t bear to tell Lucas—he looked so joyful online, and she didn’t want to disrupt his life with her troubles.
Things at work quickly deteriorated. Allen cut her out of all collaborative projects, leaving her to work alone and sending back proposals covered in red ink. He criticized her relentlessly, making her redo the same tasks over and over. As her pregnancy progressed, his behavior only worsened.
One afternoon, an accountant named Amy offered Maria a warm congratulations—but Allen abruptly appeared and rushed her back to her desk.
“I wasn’t going to mention anything about us,” she said softly.
“This is a workplace, not a gossip hub!” he barked, red-faced.
Allen didn’t ease up on her workload even as her due date approached. One day, while berating her over a project, Maria suddenly felt a sharp pain in her back. As he turned to leave, her water broke.
“The baby’s coming!” she gasped.
At the hospital, after a swift but intense labor, Maria welcomed a healthy baby boy—Riley. Though she had considered adoption, one look at her son erased all doubts.
Back home, Maria enjoyed bonding with Riley during her six-month maternity leave. But everything changed that next Monday when she received a call from the company—she’d been fired. Because she never finished the proposal before going into labor, Allen claimed she was underperforming.
Maria broke down sobbing—so distraught she didn’t notice someone had entered the room.
“Mom?” Lucas rushed over. “What’s going on? Why are you crying?”
“Lucas! I didn’t expect you here!”
“I wanted to surprise you,” he said—then his eyes widened at the sight of Riley. “Looks like I’m the one getting surprised. Who is this baby?”
Maria explained everything. Lucas listened, fists clenched, barely able to contain his rage.
“He can’t legally fire you while you’re on maternity leave,” he said. “I’ll make sure he never gets another job again.”
“Lucas, please. I don’t want a scandal.”
“I won’t let him get away with this, Mom. And now that I’m a big brother, I’ve got even more reason to protect you. Just trust me.”
Lucas walked into his mother’s former office building with a heavy heart. He couldn’t believe she had carried this burden alone. But that was about to change.
An hour later, he sat at the back of a boardroom filled with executives and shareholders—waiting.
Allen walked in, greeted the room, and looked confused by the silence.
“Something wrong?” he asked as he sat.
“Please review the documents in front of you,” the CEO said. “You’ve been accused of unlawful termination.”
Allen flipped through the papers. “This is ridiculous! I fired her for being lazy, not because she got pregnant.”
Lucas stood and introduced himself. Calmly and confidently, he explained the law and Maria’s situation.
“She went into labor the day she failed to finish that proposal. Likely triggered by the stress you caused. And let’s not forget—you were having an affair with her.”
Gasps filled the room. Allen’s face flushed red.
Lucas laid it all bare: Allen’s misconduct, his attempt to conceal the affair, and his retaliation. “You’re scared your secret will come out. A judge won’t look kindly on that.”
Allen had no response. His shame was written all over his face.
That very day, Allen was fired. Maria got her job back—and was even promoted to his role after the board discovered how much of Allen’s work she had done behind the scenes.
Lucas returned home to celebrate with his mom and baby brother. He even decided to move back nearby, commuting to the city only when needed, so he could be close to his family.
