More than two decades ago, Lisa—daughter of Patti White—made a life-changing announcement: she was expecting a baby. Lisa, who has Down syndrome, had been living independently, maintaining a full-time job, and nurturing a strong relationship with her boyfriend, who also had Down syndrome. Despite the widespread belief that men with Down syndrome are typically sterile, Lisa’s pregnancy came as a complete surprise to her family.

Although her choice faced criticism, with some labeling it reckless, Lisa’s family chose to stand firmly by her side. She experienced a typical pregnancy journey, complete with morning sickness and childbirth classes. When her son, Nic, was born prematurely, it was discovered that he too had Down syndrome. After Nic’s father sadly passed away when Nic was just five years old, Lisa’s mother, Patti, stepped in to help her daughter raise him.
Today, Nic is 24 years old and thriving, honoring the love and perseverance of his parents. He often says that his mother is the person who loves and supports him the most. In 2016, Patti shared their powerful story on Facebook to celebrate how they overcame adversity together.

The journey of Patti, Lisa, and Nic stands as a moving testament to the strength, value, and capabilities of individuals with Down syndrome—offering inspiration and hope to others around the world.
