My husband and I are currently living with his parents so we can save money, but it’s been far from easy. My mother-in-law clearly can’t stand me and is counting down the days until we leave. Yesterday was my birthday, and I received a Tiffany bracelet as a gift. Without saying a word, my MIL snatched the elegant box and opened it herself.

The moment she saw the bracelet, she exploded. “How dare he spend money like this while staying under MY roof?” she shouted. “That jewelry should be mine, not yours!” She automatically assumed the bracelet was from my husband.

The irony is, my husband gave me flowers for my birthday—which I appreciated, knowing we’re trying to save right now. The bracelet was actually from my own mother, and it genuinely lifted my spirits. But even after I explained where it came from, my MIL refused to apologize. Instead, she doubled down, insisting she deserved the gift as compensation for us living in her house.

The look in her eyes was chilling—full of bitterness and resentment. Lately, she hasn’t even been treating her son well. I feel completely stuck, unsure of how to handle the situation until we can afford to move out on our own.
