I’m 27, and my husband and I have been together for seven years — married for just under two. We have a beautiful daughter who just turned five. I’m a freelance artist and stay-at-home mom, while my husband works at a large supermarket nearby.
From the very beginning, my mother-in-law didn’t like me. In fact, she spent the first year and a half of our relationship trying to break us up. When I got pregnant, she screamed, cried, and yelled that I had “trapped” her baby — even calling me an “evil witch” in front of me.
When our daughter was born, she didn’t want anything to do with her. She refused to visit for months and later insisted that my husband and our daughter “stay upstairs” if she came over. My husband put his foot down immediately. Our home, our rules.
We only heard from her every month or two — until recently. One week before our daughter’s birthday, she suddenly demanded to come over to “shower her with gifts and give her the best birthday ever.” I said no, reminding her of her past behavior. She threw a tantrum but eventually disappeared… until yesterday.
I was in the kitchen with my mom, enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, when someone started banging on the door. It was her — my mother-in-law — looking like a caged animal.
Before I could even react, she shoved her way inside, shouting that she was here to take my daughter for a sleepover. I tried to stop her, telling her our daughter was at school and that she had no right to be here. But she didn’t listen. She ran through the house, calling our daughter’s name hysterically.
I yelled for my mom to call the police. When they arrived, she screamed at the officer, accused me of abuse, and even slapped him. He immediately arrested her. As she was driven away, banging on the car windows and screaming, I finally broke down in tears. My mom hugged me and made me another cup of coffee.
I called my husband, who was furious but stayed at work to avoid trouble. I contacted our daughter’s school and set up a password system to ensure she’d never try something like this again.
Our daughter is fine. I explained that a “bad lady” tried to take her away, but the police came to protect us. She asked if the woman would come back, and I promised I would stop her if she ever tried.
I hope I can keep that promise.
