Everyone Got Sick After the Office Potluck—But I Didn’t Eat Her Dish. What I Found Later Shocked Me.
At our office potluck, my new coworker brought a “chicken casserole” and insisted we all try it. Most of the team gave in—and just hours later, nearly everyone was violently ill and had to leave.
I didn’t eat it. And that decision might’ve saved me from something much worse.
As the office emptied out, I stayed behind to finish up. That’s when I caught a horrible smell coming from her desk drawer.
Out of curiosity—and growing concern—I opened it.
Inside were dozens of packets of expired mayonnaise, many of them leaking and rotting from the heat. Some were already open and empty. I quickly realized this was likely what she had used to make the creamy base of her casserole.
But it didn’t stop there.
Mixed among the packets were things I still can’t explain: clipped fingernails, used napkins, and a few unidentifiable items I won’t even describe.
She had only joined our team a few weeks earlier and seemed perfectly normal at first. Friendly. Quiet. Clean.
I’m not the kind of person to run to HR, but this? This felt dangerous.
I filed a report that same day.
One week later, she was quietly let go.
And none of us have looked at office potlucks the same way since.
