My daughter called me recently, and our conversation quickly took a hilarious turn. She started with, “You know that Gladiator movie I bought you?”

“Yeah,” I replied, curious where this was going.

“Fast-forward to one hour, sixteen minutes, and twenty-eight seconds,” she instructed. I followed her directions and said, “Okay, done.”

Her voice lit up. “You see the gladiator in front fighting the lion?”

“I see him,” I answered, amused.

“Right,” she continued, “now look just behind him—two gladiators having a sword fight with each other.”

“Yep, I see them too,” I confirmed.

But she wasn’t finished. “Now, behind those two, on the left-hand side of the screen, there’s a woman gladiator holding a spear.”

Intrigued by her oddly specific observation, I said, “Yes, I see her.”

Then came the punchline. “Good! Those are the sandals I want for my birthday.”

Moments like this remind me why being a parent is such a joy—she never fails to make me laugh.
