When Evie’s best friend Jade’s wedding day approached, she couldn’t have been more excited. The two had shared a lifelong bond — neighbors as children, inseparable through school, and even when college separated them, their friendship endured. Jade had stood by Evie as Maid of Honor at her own wedding, and now it was Evie’s turn to stand proudly as a bridesmaid.
But just days before the ceremony, everything changed.
Rumors began swirling — whispers that Evie’s husband, James, had been uninvited. Shocked and confused, Evie replayed the past weeks in her mind.
The tension had begun at the bridal dinner. Jade, glowing in white, had playfully begged James to fetch marshmallows and chocolate for s’mores in the middle of the night. Though tipsy, she leaned on Evie’s arm and sweet-talked James until he agreed. He went, returned, and made sure the bride’s craving was satisfied. The evening felt lighthearted — but after that night, something in Jade’s behavior shifted.
Two days before the wedding, Jade called Evie. Their conversation began warmly, but Jade suddenly asked something shocking: “Please don’t bring James to the wedding.” She offered no explanation before abruptly hanging up. Evie was stunned. Her entire family had been invited — how could her best friend exclude her husband, the very man Jade had once celebrated at their wedding?
At the bridesmaids’ nail appointment, Jade was absent, but her cousin Whitney confirmed Evie’s fears. “I heard James was uninvited,” Whitney said carefully. “Jade told us he drinks too much and she doesn’t want him embarrassing her on her big day.”
Evie was floored. The accusations didn’t align with reality. If anything, it had been Jade who was a drunken mess at the dinner, not James. When Jade eventually arrived, she denied everything — insisting it was a misunderstanding. But the trust between them was fractured.
At home, Evie confronted James. Had something happened between him and Jade? James was firm: “She made a comment — that she wished her relationship with Matthew was more like ours. That’s it. I think she was embarrassed and overreacted.”
Left bewildered and heartbroken, Evie made a painful choice. She attended the wedding alone, giving up her role as bridesmaid and arriving simply as a guest. “Go for the years of friendship you two shared,” James encouraged her, though it broke both their hearts.
