Two days before my 40th birthday, my sister’s teenage daughter passed away unexpectedly. Grieving and heartbroken, my sister begged me to cancel the big party I had planned. I told her, “I’m really sorry, but I’ve already sent out the invitations and spent a lot of money.”

She was furious. On the night of the party, while everyone was celebrating, I went to check on my baby — but she was gone. My heart stopped when I found a note that said only two words: “Sorry now?”

Panicking, I screamed for help and searched everywhere, tears streaming down my face as the entire party fell into chaos. Then I spotted my sister standing at the edge of the lawn, holding my baby. When our eyes met, she smiled — but behind that smile, I saw something broken, filled with grief and anger.

In front of all the guests, she accused me of being a terrible sister who didn’t deserve her love or her family. Then she gently placed my baby on the grass and walked away, telling me never to contact her again.

Even now, I stand by my decision. Canceling my milestone birthday after all the planning and expenses just didn’t seem reasonable — even if she’ll never understand that.
