My husband and I went to a coworker’s birthday dinner at an upscale restaurant. But once I got home, I received a message from her saying, “Thanks for coming! Your portion comes to $190 plus tip.” I was irritated, but I answered politely: “I think the lovely gift I gave you pretty much covers my share ;)”
The real shock came the next morning at work. As soon as I walked in, I noticed people staring. Another coworker rushed over and said, “You won’t believe this—someone refused to pay for their dinner last night! Such a cheapskate!” I kept quiet, not revealing it was me.
Then came the final blow—I found the gift I had given her placed on my desk. She had returned it. I still feel she completely ignored basic etiquette. If you’re hosting a birthday dinner, you shouldn’t expect guests to bring a nice present and pay for an expensive meal.
