Vernon Winfrey, Oprah’s father, has died.

A story on Oprah Daily said that Vernon Winfrey had died late on July 8. Cancer had been a problem for the 89-year-old man.

A few days ago, when Americans were celebrating the 4th of July, Winfrey posted a video to her Instagram page renaming the holiday “Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day.” Winfrey said that the backyard barbecue in Nashville was a surprise for her sick father, who had no idea what was going on.

In the video message, Oprah told her longtime friend Gayle King, “We wanted all of his friends to be able to come and celebrate him while he was there to feel the joy.”

“Giving my father his “flowers” while he’s still healthy enough to smell them. Happy 4th of July, and remember to celebrate each other while you still can,” Winfrey wrote in the post’s caption, which was a moving plea for everyone to “remember to celebrate each other.”

A few days after that party, her father died after a long fight with cancer. Since then, Winfrey has released a statement thanking people for their support after the death of her father.

The famous TV star and media mogul, who has 21.3 million Instagram followers, paid tribute to her father by posting pictures of the two of them together and video of her father sitting in his garden with friends and family. Winfrey wrote in the post that went with the photo, “Less than a week ago, we celebrated my dad in his own backyard. My friend Wintley Phipps, who is a gospel singer, sang a song for him. He FELT the love and was so happy about it that he couldn’t speak. Yesterday, I had the sacred honor of watching the man who saved my life take his last breath, surrounded by his family. When he died, we could feel peace come into the room. Peace is still there. It’s all good. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.”

On Father’s Day, Winfrey talked about how much her dad meant to her. She said, “If it weren’t for him, I doubt anyone in the world would know my name.”
