Not long ago, I came across a powerful social experiment that really opened my eyes. A young girl, dressed neatly, stood alone on a sidewalk. People passing by noticed her immediately—many stopped to ask if she was okay or needed help. But when that same girl returned in dirty, worn clothes and stood in the exact same spot, no one approached her. People walked past without a glance, and those who did look only gave her judgmental stares.
It’s a heartbreaking reflection of the world we live in today. When did we become so shallow, so quick to judge based on appearance? Why is it that the life of someone with money seems more valuable than that of someone in need?
Thankfully, there are still people who remind us that kindness and compassion still exist.
College student Casey Fischer was taking a break when she headed into Dunkin’ Donuts. On her way, she noticed a homeless man collecting spare change. Moments later, he walked into the shop, hoping to buy something to eat.
Fischer noticed the coins in his hand barely added up to a dollar. She stepped in, offered to pay for his coffee and a bagel, and invited him to sit with her.
The man introduced himself as Chris. As they talked, he opened up about his life—how being homeless had exposed him to daily cruelty, and how his struggles with drug addiction had made him someone he no longer recognized. He shared how much he wished he could become the kind of man his late mother would have been proud of.
As their time together came to an end and Casey prepared to return to class, Chris asked her to wait. He took out a crumpled piece of paper, scribbled something on it, and handed it to her.
What she read brought tears to her eyes.
“I wanted to kill myself today,” the note said. “…because of u I now do not. Thank u, beautiful person.”
In that simple act of kindness, Casey didn’t just feed a man—she gave him a reason to keep going. She reminded him of his worth.
And to her, we say: thank you. You are exactly the kind of light this world so desperately needs.
