My husband and I have been pretending to be broke—and honestly, it’s been working out surprisingly well. We started the charade after realizing that my family sees anyone with money as a personal ATM.
A few years back, we received a sizable inheritance. Almost immediately, family members began hinting (some outright asking) that we should share it with them. To avoid the constant pressure and guilt trips, we decided to act like we were struggling financially.
What started with small things turned into a full-blown performance. We told everyone we couldn’t afford dinners out or even pay our bills on time. My family completely believed us. They began offering us clothes, canned food, and even cash.
At one point, my mom saw me behind the wheel of a new car. She froze, then quietly asked how I could afford it. I told her it was just a rental for a work event. She didn’t look convinced—and that’s when I realized our little act is getting harder to keep up.
Now we’re torn: do we keep pretending, or come clean?
